Alice Hu
Alice Hu Xiaoshu is a Shanghai-born deaf visual performance artist, Arts Producer, choreographer, deaf activist, sign language teacher and multi-lingual sign language interpreter for music videos and live performances. Out of her love for art, she went to Vienna, Austria to study for four years and received a Master of Fine Arts from the Vienna University of the Fine Arts. She has worked and lived in Austria for more than ten years. She was formerly employed as a disAbility talent Advisory for the development of innovative integration programs and awareness training at the myAbility Social Enterprise Company. In the world of art, she has participated in a wide variety of film and theater performances. She has also served as a theater education instructor for deaf teenagers at the Austrian National Burgtheater, leading a sign language performance workshop for deaf-hearing integration in the community to raise social awareness. She also volunteers in social media marketing for the World Federation of the Deaf, supporting accessibility services for people with disabilities at events across the globe. Her performances include the films "Kafka, Kiffer and Chaoten" and "Unerhoer"; the Renault commercial "Passion for music"; the stage play "Midnight Movie" (Cultural and Educational Office of the German Consulate in Shanghai | Goethe-Institut),Young Theater, theater tour in Gunlin,Hangzhou & Anaya; "Gandymed in love" (Vienna Kunsthistorisches Museum); Sign Language Storm (Brut Theater, Vienna); Stage play “The Confused Wife” (Kosmos Theater, Vienna, Reichstag, Vienna); “Little Red Riding Hood”; “Cinderella”; “Membrane” (Odeon, Vienna) and proudly performed as a sign language interpreter at the Eurovision Song contest. She has hosted several international accessible and inclusive arts and cultural events, such as Deaf Nation Arts and Culture Festival, Shanghai International Deaf Film Festival, Reims (France) European Deaf Arts and Culture Festival (Clin d'Oeil) and her own founding of her workshop project "Explore the Silent World and Build a Bridge of Communication", as well as other deaf-hearing interactive experience workshops. She was nominated for the "Her Abilities Award" in the Arts, Culture and Sports category in 2019, was included in the 32nd Outstanding Deaf Women Newly Discovered List of Distinguished Deaf Women Who Changed the World by Unusual Verse, and was included in the “Power of Deaf Women” Most Outstanding by Deaf Nation of America List of Influential Deaf Women. She was invited to be the 2022 International Accessible Culture Festival - "Diverse as We Are" ("Diverse as We Are" - China International Festival of Inclusive Culture (DAWA)) Deaf Ambassador / Deaf Cultural Accessibility Consultation and collaborated with The UK artist Cathy Mager in projecting “Botanical Sign Night Shanghai” onto the Duolun Museum of Modern and Arts in Shanghai and founded the Deaf east theater in China and invited Ramesh Meyyappan to lead a Visual Language workshop together to train up and coming Chinese acting students.
Alice continues to aim to contribute to change in our world by building social bridges, enhancing diversity and removing communication barriers for the benefit of a brighter future.
